One of the most expensive homes in U.S. is in Hillsboro Beach

A 58,000-square-foot home (30,000-square-feet of living space) dubbed Playa Vista Isle sits on 5 acres along State Road A1A in Hillsboro Beach, a mile stretch of land known as "Millionaire’s Mile." It’s listed for sale at $159 million.

What would you pay for a house in Broward County with ocean-to-Intracoastal access that also has a 3,000-bottle wine cellar, six waterfalls and a putting green with its own sand trap?

The 58,000-square-foot estate in Hillsboro Beach, dubbed Playa Vista Isle, went for sale at a live auction on Nov. 15 through the real estate auction company, Concierge Auctions.

Asking price: $159 million.

One Sotheby’s International Realty, which has the listing along with the auction house, says it’s among the most expensive right now in the country.

The mansion is one of about 25 homes in the country for sale — either listed or quietly marketed — for more than $100 million, according to Laura Brady, CEO and founder of Concierge Auctions.

Last year, Forbes reported that number was 18, so “it’s definitely an increasing category of opportunity in the U.S.,” she said.

She knows her pool of people is limited: There are 2,700 documented billionaires in the world but still, that’s “a category of potential purchasers,” she said.

The property, at 935 and 939 Hillsboro Mile, includes the house and an adjacent 2-acre piece of land along State Road A1A, on a milelong stretch of land known as “Millionaire’s Mile.”

The mansion was completed earlier this year. “The seller initially intended to live in the property, but like wealthy people often do, he simply changed his mind. He has many options,” Brady said.

It has 30,000 square feet of living space, with 11 bedrooms; 22 bathrooms; a 3D-IMAX, in-home theater with 18 recliners; 20-car garage with secure tunnel access; wine cellar with individually controlled temperature and humidity with an adjacent tasting room; a pool with a slide; and a Jacuzzi with ocean views.

Other features include:

500 feet of ocean in the backyard.

Two docks able to accommodate both a 220-foot and a 150-foot yacht simultaneously on its 500 feet of Intracoastal frontage.

An additional 17-space private dockside parking area for guests.

Floor-to-ceiling retractable moving glass walls that offer panoramic scenes of the ocean.

Marble flooring from South Africa.

Bathroom plumbing fixtures that are 22-karat, gold-plated from France.

Grand staircase that took more than three years to design and build.

A poolside lanai bar with a double beer tap.

The house sits behind 12-foot-tall, 22-karat, gold-leaf gilded entry gates. There is a 29-foot-high waterfall at the foot of a two-carwide circular limestone driveway with security cameras.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Brady said. “There was no item that was overlooked. Everything was done to impeccable detail.”

If this house sells anywhere near its asking price, it will make history in Broward.

Three of the top five most-expensive homes in the county’s history have sold in Hillsboro Beach since 2014, according to Holly M. Cimino, director of Finance, Budget and Tax Roll for the Broward County Property Appraiser.

Fort Lauderdale is No. 1 on the list, though, for a property that sold for $27.5 million in 2015.

“There’s crazy prices out there,” said Michael Citron, a real estate agent with RE/MAX Park Creek Realty who specializes in northwest Broward and Boca Raton. “There’s .0001 percent someone in the world can afford that … a Saudi prince is going to have to love it, or a techie billionaire.”

Prospective buyers must plunk down $250,000 to be able to bid. Bidding starts Nov. 12 at conciergeauctions.com. The auction will stream live.
